Day 1: Sintra walk DSC_0048

After a 9 am Lisbon pickup from the airport or hotel, we take a 30-minute transfer to resplendent Sintra, a tiny village known for its excellent spring waters, noble estates nestled in the woods and two royal palaces.
A favorite of Romantic era writers and artists, Sintra is one of the most delightful places to be found in Portugal. It is on a vast and verdant rocky mountain, in a situation admirably picturesque with panoramas of forest and sea. Sintra is, indeed, “a garden of earthly paradise.”
After a quick stop to leave our bags at the historic Lawrence’s hotel, one of the oldest hotels in Europe, we’ll discover Sintra and some of its monuments on a walking tour through town past the National Palace and up to the Moorish castle, where we’ll enjoy the amazing views.
Tonight we will sleep soundly in Sintra.

Distance: ca. 5 km with option to walk more.

DSC_0048Day 2: Coastal walk to Cabo da Roca (Roca Cape)

Today we’ll begin our walk from the nearby seaside village of Ericeira, a favorite beach for local surfers, and meander south along the coast of the Atlantic to the most western point in continental Europe – Cabo da Roca. The view from this landmark on the cliff are so impressive you just might think you can spot New York somewhere on the horizon!
Tonight, we’ll return our hotel in Sintra.

Distance: 6.5 km or 14.5 km.

Day 3: Peninha to Cascais walk

Today’s walk begins with a visit to the singular Hobbit-like Capuchos Convent in the heart of the Sintra forest. Then we’re off to Peninha, one of the highest and most beautiful viewpoints in the Sintra mountain range, with a 17th c. sanctuary. From here we’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean as we saunter down trails Guincho beach. Once down the mountain we’ll take a dedicated pedestrian boardwalk along the rocky Atlantic shore and pass 17th c. forts and lighthouses to reach the quaint fishing village of Cascais on the bay.  After visiting the highlights of the town, including the famous Santinis ice cream parlour, our tour ends at the Cascais train station where you can hop on the train to Lisbon.

Distance: 7.8 km or 18 km (mostly downhill).
