Whether you are a nature lover or bird watching enthusiast, in a only seven days tour, you can observe many relatively rare birds in completely different habitats in Spain and Portugal, in the company of extremely experienced and knowledgeable multilingual bird watching guides. Our guides are always very experienced in the locals we are visiting and know the best spots. Later, you can always come back and deepen your knowledge about one of the habitats or species by taking a more focused bird watching tour.
During a 7 day / 6 night tour, you will see rare birds specific to each of three habitats in Spain and Portugal: the Mediterranean Shrub and Woodland, the Steppe lands and the river mountains.
“The Mediterranean Shrub and Woodland Birds” (eg: Doñana)
Typical Mediterranean Shrub and Woodland are found in the some parts of Spain and in Alentejo plain region of Portugal and consist primarily of cork and holm oak trees, which provide a rich habitat for a variety of bird species. On a typical tour, you will be able to see the following species, residents in the Mediterranean Shrub and Woodland: the Azure-winged Magpie Cyanopica cyanus, the Black-winged Kite Elanus caeruleus, the Hoopoe Upupa epops, the Rock Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis and the Woodlark Lullula arborea. In spring, you might also see the following birds breeding in the Mediterranean Shrub and Woodland (eg. the Montado in Alentejo): the Red-necked Nightjar – Caprimulgus ruficolis, the Bee-eater – Merops apiaster, the Great Spotted Cuckoo – Clamator glandarius, and the Woodchat Shrike – Lanius senator.
Occasionally, you may also spot the Booted Eagle – Hieraaetus pennatus here. With luck one can spot the relatively are Spanish Imperial Eagle – Aquila adalberti as well, an endemic species to the Iberian Peninsula.
Steppe lands of the Spanish Extremadura and Portuguese Alentejo Birds
The birds that inhabit the Steppe land habitats of Spain and Portugal are quite specific in these regions. Resident species all year round in this habitat are: the Black-bellied Sandgrouse – Pterocles orientalis, the Calandra Lark – Melanocorypha calandra, the Corn Bunting – Miliaria calandra, the Great Bustard – Otis tarda, Little Bustard – Tetrax tetrax, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse – Pterocles alchata and Stone Curlew – Burhinus oedicnemus.
During breeding season, Steppe lands support other birds such as the Collared Pranticole – Glareola pranticola, the Lesser Kestrel – Falco naumanni, the Montagu’s Harrier – Circus pygargus and the Roller Rolieiro Coracias garrulous. Winter brings along a significant numbers of cranes – Grus grus, and Red Kites – Milvus milvus.
The Mountain Regions Birds (eg: Sierra de Gredos)
The mountain areas of Eastern Spain and North and East of Portugal have large numbers of breeding birds such as the Bonelli’s Eagle Hieraaetus fasciatus, the Eagle Owl Bubo bubo, the Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos, the Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus, the Red Kite Milvus milvus, the Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio, the Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus and the Wryneck – Jynx torquilla.
In higher mountain areas you can also spot birds like the Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana, the Rock Thrush Monticola saxatilis, the Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans and the Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris.
In the Northeast of Portugal, large river valleys with cliffs such as the Douro, are excellent places to spot soaring bird species such as the Eagle Owl – Bubo bubo, the Black Vulture – Aegypius monachus, the Bonelli’s Eagle – Hieraaetus fasciatus, the Golden Eagle – Aquila chrysaetos and the Griffon Vulture – Gyps fulvus. And during breeding season it is also possible to watch the Black Stork – Ciconia nigra, the Booted Eagle – Hieraaetus pennatus and the Egyptian Vulture – Neophron percnopterus.
