In the quiet countryside of Constantina in the heart of Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural Park, we begin cycling the first of two gentle climbs. Our goal is the Via Verde (rails to trails path) at the old mine town of “Cerro del Hierro.” It’s all downhill on the dedicated cycle path to a delicious midday creekside picnic. After lunch, we continue riding a loop through the vineyards riding up a winding hill followed by a well-deserved downhill bringing us back to the valley and to the town of Contantina. After an espresso at a local café we’ll board our van and the World Heritage Site of Cordoba is our next stop. We take time to freshen up before a guided walking tour of the historical city center. CORDOBA HILL ROMP & EVENING RAMBLE

A favorite route with cyclists, today’s romp loops through the hills around Cordoba where we cycle on paved roads and enjoy the region’s splendid natural beauty. Hearts will soon be pumping as we take on 7.5 miles of climbing. Spain’s version of the Tour the France has raced along this road, so watch for the names of professional riders painted on the asphalt. Our efforts are rewarded with a scenic view of Cordoba and the Guadalquivir valley. Rolling into the town of Santa Maria de Trassierra, we enjoy a refreshment and a nice selection of tapas for lunch before cycling along a shaded road for the last smooth uphill before descending back to Cordoba. We recommend the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, a World Heritage Site, and enjoying a traditional Flamenco show. Breakfast and lunch included.

Our loop ride to Zuheros begins with a beautiful slice of scenery full of olive groves, fortified cities, watchtowers and lovely villages. The ride follows the stunning Sierra Subbetica Natural Park whose mountains date from the same time period as the mighty Himalayas. After a few climbs, we’ll take a break in the delightful village of Esparragal to chat with the locals. The rest of today’s epic ride of ups and downs brings us to the 1890’s train station of Luque where a picnic lunch awaits. After lunch we cycle back to our hotel along the ‘Via Verde’ bike path. Awesome Adventure!
This adventure was thoughtfully planned and well organized, allowing for both a great workout and first hand experience to the way of living in the Andalusia region.
We rode through varied terrain, geologic, and micro climate conditions over a broad geographic area, made possible by being transported by van to each evening’s lodging area location. The fresh air and smell of local flora is unforgettable.
Our guides were highly educated, multilingual and very engaging, paying careful attention to everyone in the group. Healthy fresh picnic lunches were prepared for our enjoyment.
Lodging was excellent, comfortable and true to the character of the area.
The bikes were geared to climb any grade; be sure to follow the suggested pre-trip training to make the most of what this adventure has to offer.
One of the best trips I have ever taken over my years of travel.

Amazing trip with equally Amazing guides.
This was my sixth bike trip and easily one of my favorites. The scenery everyday was so beautiful and so different. Some days were along quiet country roads, other days through acres of olive orchards and others through well you’ll have to go to see it’s beauty for yourself. The guides were awesome. So accommodating, knowledgeable about the country and it’s history The fellow travelers were a lot of fun as well. I met so many interesting people on this trip and hope to see them again on another trip.
Why did you choose this trip? This was my first trip to Spain and what better way to see it than on a bicycle with Terracotta Journeys.

Best cycling trip through southern Spain
I’ve done several bike trips, this was my first cycling trip with Terracotta Journeys. There are lots of hills, but nothing terrible or incredibly long and the guides were waiting at the top/on the way up the bigger hills, cheering us on. The guides (Jorge and Raoul) were amazing, so friendly and always upbeat/happy. They are so passionate about cycling and knowledgeable about the local towns/region of Spain. It really felt like this trip was just their favorite rides in the area. They were so hard-working and did whatever they could to keep us happy. We had short van rides most days, but it was worth it to get to such great areas to ride. We rode through endless olive orchards, mostly on small roads with very little traffic/rare cars, occasionally on hard-packed gravel trails.
The GPS units were great and we had access to navigation on the phone if desired. Never any issues with getting lost/not knowing were to go or how much further we had to ride. Lunches were picnics most days (one day in a restaurant due to really bad weather). The picnics were amazing, with plenty of really yummy but healthy food. We had a few cultural experiences, including olive oil and Iberian ham tasting, as well as time to tour the Mosque-Cathedral in Cordoba and the Alhambra in Granada. Dinners were traditional family style, with never a shortage of food, and late in the evening. Food was great and it was nice to get to spend time getting to know each other over meals.
These trips are always great to get to know other guests. While cycling is a bit more challenging to chat while riding than other trips, there was some down time in afternoons to get to know others.
This is a newer trip this year, but is so well-organized it felt like they’ve been doing this for years. The guides are so professional and passionate about cycling. This is a great combination of challenging hills, cycling through beautiful countryside and a bit of culture while seeing some of the best towns in Andalusia. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys some casual cycling and is interested in Spain.
Why did you choose this trip? I’ve always enjoyed Spain, but it’s been 15 years since my last trip. I started participating in cycling trips with REI this year after having done several hiking/trekking and kayaking trips. When this trip was announced earlier this Spring and I heard about it from a guide on another bike trip, I had to sign up for it.
What would your advice be to potential travelers? Get ready for the hills, look at the elevation/distance profiles provided. You will be riding hybrid bikes which are a bit heavier and have wider handlebars than most are used to. Be prepared for some weather changes. We had an unexpected cold-front come through and it was pretty chilly/rainy a few days.
What was the highlight of your trip? The whole trip was great. Great combination of cycling, cultural sites and getting to know amazing fellow travelers and guides. There is nothing I would change to the itinerary (except for maybe adding even more days to the trip). Food was great, cultural outings were at great times, and we had a bit of downtime daily but were never bored.
