Our hike begins in a coastal pine forest planted by King D. Dinis in the 14th century and continues along the cliffs with dramatic views of the ocean. We’ll pass by the lighthouse famous for its viewpoint of Nazaré’s world-renowned giant waves and end our hike with lunch at Nazaré beach. Before stopping for lunch, we visit the medieval castle of Almourol perched on a small island in the middle of the Tagus River. Explore Buçaco National Forest & Royal Palace, walkabout medieval Coimbra.
Today we transfer to Buçaco National Forest for a magical meander in the woods. The forest dates back to the 6th century when it belonged to a Benedictine monastery. The virgin forest was conceded to the Barefoot Carmelites in the 17th century as a spiritual hermitage, where they could completely withdraw from the outside world. On our hike we’ll marvel at the magnificent Buçaco Royal Palace, the last royal palace, built between 1988 and 1907; the art and details of this amazing building mix Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Manueline styles. Then we’ll continue on the trail past natural springs and streams through forest with both ancient and exotic tree species including an section with primitive forest that most likely existed in the mountains of central Portugal before human occupation. This makes it highly relevant ecologically, both for its rarity and uniqueness at national level and for its biodiversity. Other areas of the forest contain exotic species that the Portuguese mariners brought back from their travels exploring various continents. We have lunch in the spa town of Luso, known throughout Portugal for its soft, delicious water.
Upon our return to Coimbra we take you on a guided walk through historical Coimbra. We start at the top at Santa Cruz Monastery, the resting place of D. Afonso Henriques, the founder and first king of Portugal, then we traverse the University of Coimbra grounds, finally meandering down through the medieval streets full towards downtown to our hotel. Perfect mix of hiking and experiencing the culture
My husband and I love to travel and when this REI adventure popped up on my email we booked it immediately. It was the perfect mix of hiking in many different terrians and experiencing many historic sites in Portugal. Our guides, Manuel, Nuno and Andreia did an excellent job of showing us their beautiful country.

Portugal, Inside Out
It’s hard to believe how many great moments our thoughtful guides managed to cram into six days, from gasp-inducing views of the Atlantic to witty asides about the rise and fall of the Knights Templar. This was a tour of Portugal for outsiders, designed by insiders, with perfect pacing and surprising vistas, large and small.

Perfect Portugal Trip!
REI’s Heart of Portugal trip was perfect and much of the credit goes to our amazing guides Nuno, Manuel and Andréa. They worked tirelessly to ensure that all our group’s needs were met and that all the visits, hikes, group meals and hotels were perfectly orchestrated. Additionally, traveling with them provided an opportunity to discuss Portuguese culture. While some chose to sleep on the van rides, it was also wonderful to listen to Portuguese music, discuss history, politics and a learn a few Portuguese words and expressions! Our guides were articulate, well-informed, patient and humorous.
Each day began with a briefing about the day’s activities with a map to chart the progress on our journey. Additionally, our guides had refreshments and water available at all times. They had personally designed the trip from selecting hotels, restaurants, sumptuous picnics to the beautiful hiking trails and cultural sites. It was evident they have great pride in their country and in REI. “REI adventure” was a favorite mantra of Nuno’s at each new, exciting venue.
We enjoyed beautiful coastal hikes, visits to a medieval UNESCO castle and tile artisan, a thermal spa, rainy day hiking in a National park, an underground cave visit (one of the Seven Natural wonders of Portugal) and even a Port wine tasting inside the cavernous bottom! A highlight for me was our stay in Tomar and a tour of the magnificent Convent of Christ (another UNESCO site) and a visit to Almoural castle on the Tagus River. We had time in Tomar to privately explore the cobblestone streets, shops, alleys and enjoy the beautiful sunset behind the castle. During our hikes the guides pointed out stork nests, plants used by sailors at sea and even explained the Portuguese cork industry. They have an extensive knowledge of Portuguese history and are excited to share it.
Throughout the visit we enjoyed amazing meals of fish and grilled sausage and a variety of wines from various regions of Portugal. These meals were great opportunities to get to know our fellow traveling companions and for extended discussions with our guides. It was impressive that the guides went to great lengths to make sure everyone was satisfied with food choices and focused on dietary needs Our trip ended in the enchanting Bucaco Forest in the Heart of Portugal where we stayed at the Palace Hotel and had a private, sumptuous final dinner.
